Purple Flowers

Wednesday, May 27th, 2009

I travel highway 12, between two little towns several times a month, sometimes several times a week. I had no idea that my little part time job would involve so much travel, but there I am, running up and down the road. It is a fairly remote road, so I don’t always see a lot of traffic on it. Many parts of the drive are very scenic and beautiful, but it has its stretches of dull, boring brown.

Almost over night, a funny little thing happened that caught and held my attention. It could not have been more than a week since the last time I passed this stretch of desolate brown on my way to Reserve, but out of the corner of my eye as I whizzed past (I must have been running late) one morning, I saw it. It was a patch of green foliage about the size of a basketball, right on the edge of the pavement, where the asphalt abruptly turned to dust. This little clump of dark green leaves held the most beautiful array of bright purple flowers I have seen. My eyes and mind caught the snapshot, that I reviewed the rest of the way to town, and my spirit was lifted. I took it as a personal present from the Lord and continued my day.

On the way home, I looked for the little clump again, this time on the other side of the road than I was, and again found it, bright and cheery in the midst of drab. Some of you will know from my brief description what this plant is, and will probably inform me that it is a native weed.  For the past several weeks, however, it has cheered my trip to Reserve many times over, just growing there, all by itself in the midst of nothing.

As with most things, the Lord has a lesson in it all for us. I was thinking of this clump of purple flowers that brought such uplift to me on my otherwise tedious trips, and the Lord impressed me that that is how His children are to be in this world. They are to be His shining lights and bright moments in the world. We are to be as a breath of God’s fresh air to a world that is choking on the pollution of Satan and “the world”. We are planted where we are for His reasons.

When I think of the flat, dry, ho-hum part of the highway, I wonder what would ever grow there, and who would ever think to plant something pretty there. God would. He puts things where He does for those who are willing to look and see Him, and recognize His touch to bring His cheer into their lives. Similarly, He plants us- His people- in different parts of the earth and in different sectors of society to be a bright spot for Him in someone else’s life. I imagine that if that plant had thoughts about it, the plant would say, “Who wants to be out here all by itself, in the middle of nothingness… and by the side of a dangerous road at that! I need to be in a beautiful garden!” But God knows that the travelers of that highway need that purple flower right where it is. He knows that the people we see and encounter today need our presence, our smile, our kind and blessing ways right where we are.

We may be in isolated country, with not much around us, like my little purple flowers. We may be in a huge flower garden, that receives many spectators, and add our own unique color and scent to the array. Wherever we are, we can be confident that the Lord has us there, and if we can just “bloom where we are planted” as the saying goes, we will be OK.

The Lord may have you where you are to be the happy and cheerful face to your coworkers, the friendly customer at your local grocery store, the kind neighbor who always waves, or whatever you are for Him at the time and place you are at. You may not be able to give a sermon every day, or lead someone to the Lord every time you go out, but you can bring glory to the Lord just by living your life for Jesus right out loud through your actions.

My little purple flower did not have to fly around or jump up and down and make a big show. It just steadily grew and bloomed at the edge of the highway, day after day, unfolding its beautiful purple flowers to the world. It brought cheer to me, and glory to the Lord who created us both. Likewise, we children of the Lord are the only hope for those around us to bring cheer in the middle of a Life- less and futile world, and glory to the Lord. Jesus said that He came to give Life, and that, abundantly. We are what is left of Him physically in this world. If we are to point others to Life in Him, we have to have His Life and cheer in us- in our attitudes, in our appearance and in our interactions with others.

Every time I pass my little purple flowers, as I have now affectionately termed them, I am reminded and challenged to be a purple flower to someone in my path this day. Let’s make a conscious effort in the days ahead to not only notice and rejoice in the purple flowers that the Lord puts in our way to brighten it, but to also be a purple flower to those who share our path. The Lord put us right where we are, whether in the dessert or the lush green, or somewhere in between. He knows what we need. He knows who needs us. Whatever road we are on, let’s bloom.

SELAH

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

The world is swirling around me. Four different voices call “Mom!” at close intervals, and the questions come, “Can I have this?” “Can I do such and such?” “Will you come here?” “Listen to this!” “So and so is on the phone for you.” I didn’t even hear the phone ring. A quick answer here and a nod there, and the morning’s activities move right along. I get everyone in the household set and/or out the door, and have a quick quiet time with the Lord before I must shower and get myself out the door. And such is life. But in this particular quiet time, I notice the word SELAH, and the Lord brings it to my attention in the reading not once or twice, but several times. SELAH. We need SELAH in our lives.

The world around us moves at break speed, and our schedules often reflect the rush to get two week’s worth of “stuff” done in a day. Accomplishing things is good, don’t get me wrong. I am grateful for the opportunities each day to work and play and “get things done”. But if we don’t have our moments of Selah, we will not only be wrecks spiritually, but physically, emotionally and mentally as well.

Just what is Selah? That word occurs many, many times in the scriptures. It means to “pause and reflect on”, “pause and calmly think of this”, and to “thoughtfully consider” (as opposed to rush through the scripture reading for today so you can check that off your list). It means that something very important has just been said, and you need to give it thoughtful attention, consideration and let it soak deeply into you before going on. It may mean forgoing the remainder of your reading and concentrate on the thought, letting it settle within you so deeply that it becomes a part of you.

We all give quick answers and have to make spur of the moment decisions throughout our days. Time marches on and we have to keep in step. Many times we don’t get to really reflect on the day until the end of it, when all is dark and quiet, and we can make a mental recap of the day’s activities. We are in this fast paced world, but we don’t have to be of it. The Lord wants us to pause and consider Him in all our ways (Proverbs 3:6). He had the writers of the Scriptures put those Selahs in there to remind us that in order to grasp key concepts like His love and care for us, His absolute power and majesty, and countless other truths, we need to Selah-pause and think about that!

If we start out our day with Selah in our devotional time, our Selah enables us to handle the challenges of our day better. We are in the reflective state of realizing God’s all consuming presence in our life and circumstances. We may have to give a quick answer or make a snap decision, but we can do it with confidence because we have had our moments of Selah that have prepared us for our day and indeed are carrying us through the day, moment by moment. The wonderful thing about us, as God’s crowning glory of creation, is that we can take those moments of Selah with us throughout the day. We can actually be thoughtfully considering God and His Word while we are doing whatever other daily responsibilities we have.

We can, for example, consider Psalms 60:1-4, which is followed by Selah, throughout our long and tedious work day, remembering God’s sovereignty and His promises to those of us who fear Him. The Word of God is filled with treasures for our hearts, minds and souls. When we learn to Selah, I predict that our days, nights and circumstances will come into clearer focus and deeper meaning as we snuggle closer to the One who bids us to- thoughtfully consider these things.

We have some pretty awesome things to pause and think about, like:

  • God will redeem my life from the grave; he will surely take me to himself. Ps 49:15
  • Let the nations know they are but men Ps.9: 20
  • To the Lord I cry aloud, and he answers me from his holy hill. Ps.3: 4
  • From the Lord comes deliverance. May your blessings be on your people.  Ps 3:8
  • Who is he, this King of glory? The Lord Almighty- He is the King of glory.  Ps. 24:10
  • You are my hiding place; you will protect me from trouble and surround me with songs of deliverance. Ps. 32:7
  • The Lord Almighty is with us; the God of Jacob is our fortress Ps.46: 7
  • I long to dwell in your tent forever and take refuge in the shelter of your wings. PS 61:4
  • Trust in him at all times, O people; pour our your hearts to him, for God is our refuge. Ps. 62:8
  • May the nations be glad and sing for joy, for you rule the peoples justly and guide the nations of the earth. Ps. 67: 4
  • Praise be to the Lord, to God our Savior, who daily bears our burdens. Ps. 68:19
  • You forgave the iniquity of your people and covered all their sins. Ps. 85:2

The list goes on. Perhaps these are some of the things we should fill our minds with, as we are instructed in Philippians 4:8-9. Selah, pause and think on these things!
